Australian car insurance provider, NRMA Insurance, has added gesture recognition to their outdoor digital signage using Omek Beckon™ on the Panasonic D-Imager depth camera, offering an innovative spin to the advertisement of their services.

In this video, a pedestrian engages with a digital poster of a 3D car model. The poster allows her to explore the vehicle both inside and out, and highlight the unique auto parts NRMA claims most other insurance providers do not cover. By selecting the areas of the car that are most important to her, the pedestrian is able to tailor the experience to meet her interests and discover more about NRMA.

New Version of Cross-Camera Development Suite Expands Gesture and Tracking Capabilities and Ease of Use, While Reducing System Overhead

San Francisco, CA, April 2, 2012 – Omek Interactive (www.omekinteractive.com), the leading provider of gesture recognition and body tracking technology, unveiled the latest release of its flagship product, Omek Beckon™, at the Embedded Vision Alliance Summit held in conjunction with the DESIGN West conference. Omek Beckon is a full-featured development suite which enables developers to easily and cost-effectively add gesture and body tracking interfaces to their devices and applications, working in conjunction with 3D cameras.

Beckon 3.0 provides developers with many new features, including enhanced tracking capabilities, player selection capabilities, and substantially reduced system overhead, along with new development tools that help developers more rapidly and easily deploy gesture interfaces into their applications. The new features make Beckon an even more ideal gesture solution for developers of a wide range of applications and systems, including game developers, UI developers, developers of medical and fitness applications, and developers of interactive digital signage systems.

New Beckon 3.0 features include:

Enhanced lower-body tracking support, for applications which track leg and foot positions

Support for body rotation, for gaming, medical, fitness and physical therapy applications

Enhanced overall tracking resolution and stability, for applications requiring finely grained accuracy

Enhanced player selection features, for better handling of crowds, such as viewers of an interactive digital sign

Reduced CPU overhead, to free up more resources for games and other resource-intensive applications

New skeleton viewer and gesture viewer tools to facilitate rapid prototyping and development

New sample code libraries for easier development and integration with other development frameworks

Like the previous versions of Omek Beckon, Beckon 3.0 allows developers to create applications that work across all the major 3D cameras, initially shipping with support for the Kinect, PrimeSense, ASUS Xtion and SoftKinetic DepthSense cameras, and adding support for cameras from Samsung, Panasonic and other providers following the launch.

Developers can use Beckon in their C#, C++, and Flash-based applications, and take advantage of the provided plug-ins for more rapid integration into the Unity and OGRE engines and the Microsoft .NET framework.

In addition to the new product features, Omek is also announcing new pricing and evaluation terms for Beckon 3.0. Beckon 3.0 developers will be able to enjoy an extended non-commercial evaluation period, while working with the full feature set included in the commercial version, assisted by forum, community and knowledge base support. Upon commercial deployment, developers will be able to more cost effectively deploy gesture-based applications through a new tiered pricing system.

Version 3.0 of Omek Beckon will be available for download from the Omek web site (www.omekinteractive.com) in May.

“The range of applications for gesture technology continues to expand, and we’re excited to raise the level of accuracy and features developers can expect from a gesture recognition tool, while at the same time reducing requirements for system resources,” noted Janine Kutliroff, CEO of Omek Interactive. “By expanding the capabilities of Omek Beckon, and making it easier to try and acquire, we’ll be able to help more developers and designers transform the way their customers interact with the applications and devices they create.”
